CALOOSA'S GUIDE TO KEEPING COOL AND PROTECTED IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA SUN

Rebecca Fordham

It’s no secret…if you wear Caloosa then you love Life on the Water where the sun’s rays are the most extreme.   South Florida has the sun dialed on “high” all year round and the Caloosa brand was built for Florida’s tropical weather.  Not only do we offer UPF protection in most of our apparel, but we also find the lightest fabrics that let your skin breathe in the highest humidity.  With Caloosa, you don’t have to choose between looking stylish and keeping your skin safe.  We have combined performance apparel with the latest trends to keep you looking and feeling cool and fresh, even with the heat turned up.

Here are some tips to help keep you cool in the hot Florida sun…

1.

Look for clothing with a UPF rating.  What is UPF?  UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and indicates the level of UV protection a fabric or garment offers.   Caloosa’s Ultra Comfort Shirts offer a UPF rating of 30+ and our Fishing Shirts are UPF 50+

2.

Find apparel that is light weight and has wicking capabilities. Wicking is a fabric technology that pulls sweat away from your body, keeping you much cooler in the heat and humidity.  Caloosa’s entire Ultra Comfort Collection has wicking capabilities and all of our garments are the lightest weight possible while still maintaining quality. Caloosa’s womens fashion collection offers our light weight marbled heather fabric which has the softest hand-feel; a favorite of our customers.

3.

Always wear a hat.  A great hat for sun protection has a 3 inch brim all the way around and creates a shadow for your face and the back of your neck.  In Florida, it’s a good idea to keep a hat in your car, on your boat and in your beach bag. There is always an opportunity to use it.

4.

Seek shade whenever possible.  Too much sun can cause sunburn or skin cancer but beyond that the sun can cause heat exhaustion and dehydration.  The best way to prevent all of this is to stay out of the sun.  While staying out of the sun isn’t always the most fun, you can seek out shady spots under the palm trees or umbrellas at the beach, rent a cabana at the pool or sit under the Bimini top on the boat whenever possible.

5.

Stay hydrated.  Staying hydrated is key to keeping your skin looking good.  Always carry a reusable water bottle with you and add a squirt of fresh lemon or lime juice to your water for natural electrolytes.
